Over 60,000 get cholera vaccine

Busia district suffered several cholera outbreaks, leaving many people dead and others hospitalised, according to the acting district health officer, Dr Wills Syongola.

Busia municipality residents in Busia district have started getting a cholera vaccine in an effort to build their immunity against the disease.

Over 60,000 people are expected to get the oral cholera vaccine in the campaign launched by the Busia Resident District Commissioner, Capt. Chris Mike Okiria.

Busia district suffered several cholera outbreaks, leaving many people dead and others hospitalised, according to the acting district health officer, Dr Wills Syongola.



"The worst happened in 2017, during which six people out of the over 100 infected died," Syongola said.

The same vaccination exercise is being carried out in Kasese, Ntoroko, Hoima and Namayingo districts.

Geoffrey Wandera, the Busia district chairperson, commended the implementing partners for taking the lead in mobilising residents against cholera.

 

 

The district's safe water coverage, he said stands at 75% and appealed to residents to desist from open defecation which he cited as the main cause of cholera.
