Nevada is dispatching more than 200 National Guard members to Washington, D.C., to provide security, logistics and communications support for President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration.
The announcement comes after D.C. authorities requested assistance, although the activation of the Nevada troops was planned before the deadly riots at the U.S. Capitol last week, officials said.
Nevada is one of 30 states sending personnel after federal officials authorized up to 20,000 troops to support the Jan. 20 inauguration.
The Nevada personnel are with Army Guard’s 1st Squadron, 221st Cavalry and 3665th Explosive Ordnance Disposal Company and the Air Guard’s 152nd Communications Flight, officials said.
They were leaving this week, but officials declined to provide specifics.
Concerns have been raised about potential disturbances at Biden’s swearing-in after supporters of President Donald Trump forced their way into the Capitol while lawmakers voted to certify the November election results.
Five people, including a police officer, died in the riot. According to reports, the FBI issued a memo this week warning of the escalating threat of political violence.
