Expressions in Paper and Clay

Expressions in Paper and Clay will show the vibrant, engaging, and innovative traditions of Japanese printmaking and ceramics spanning the last fifty years. Expressions in Paper and Clay juxtaposes contemporary prints by Japanese artists on loan from Joy and Timothy Light with a newly promised gift of contemporary ceramics by Japanese artists from the Carol and Jeffrey Horvitz Collection. This exhibition explores how abstract and realistic concepts come to fruition using these disparate media.

Artists featured in this exhibition include potter Yoshitaka Tsurara and renowned abstract printmaker Toko Shinodo, among others. Tsurura creates minimalist landscapes on refined monochromatic vessels. Mayumi Oda composes meticulous and imaginative images. The luminous and dynamic surfaces of Ken Matsuzaki’s oribe glazeware are energetic and colorful. Reika Iwami’s textured and embossed woodblock prints express strong geometry. Iguchi Daisuke’s highly regarded refined forms reveal subtle exteriors. Naoko Matsubara’s lively compositions that frequently reference Buddhist traditions and holy sites, along with the bold rinpa inspired sculptures of Takuo Nakamura reveal the intersection of tradition and innovation.

Expressions in Paper and Clay continues the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts’ long-standing commitment to presenting art and techniques that intersect with disciplines taught in the Kirk Newman Art School, while illuminating Japanese innovations in art for the community.
