Six Degrees from James Baker: A Familiar Figure Reemerges With the Release of the Twitter Files

Below is my column in the New York Post on the reemergence of James Baker, the former FBI general counsel, at the center of the Twitter suppression scandal.

Here is the column:

As thousands of Twitter documents are released on the company’s infamous censorship program, much has been confirmed about the use of back channels by Biden and Democratic officials to silence critics on the social media platform. However, one familiar name immediately popped out in the first batch of documents released through journalist Matt Taibbi: James Baker. For many, James Baker is fast becoming the Kevin Bacon of the Russian collusion scandals.

Baker has been featured repeatedly in the Russian investigations launched by the Justice Department, including the hoax involving the Russian Alfa Bank. When Clinton campaign lawyer Michael Sussmann wanted to plant the bizarre false claim of a secret communications channel between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin, Baker was his go-to, speed-dial contact. (Baker would later testify at Sussmann’s trial). Baker’s name also appeared prominently in controversies related to the other Russian-related FBI allegations against Trump. He was effectively forced out due to his role and reportedly found himself under criminal investigation. He became a defender of the Russian investigations despite findings of biased and even criminal conduct. He was also a frequent target of Donald Trump on social media, including Twitter. Baker responded with public criticism of Trump for his “false narratives.”

After leaving the FBI, Twitter seemed eager to hire Baker as deputy general counsel. Ironically, Baker soon became involved in another alleged back channel with a presidential campaign. This time it was Twitter that maintained the non-public channels with the Biden campaign (and later the White House). Baker soon weighed in with the same signature bias that characterized the Russian investigations.

Weeks before the 2020 presidential election, the New York Post ran an explosive story about a laptop abandoned by Hunter Biden that contained emails and records detailing a multimillion dollar influence peddling operation by the Biden family. Not only was Joe Biden’s son Hunter and brother James involved in deals with an array of dubious foreign figures, but Joe Biden was referenced as the possible recipient of funds from these deals.

The Bidens had long been accused of influence peddling, nepotism, and other forms of corruption. Moreover, the campaign was not denying that the laptop was Hunter Biden’s and key emails could be confirmed from the other parties involved. However, at the request of the “Biden team” and Democratic operatives, Twitter moved to block the story. It even suspended those who tried to share the allegations with others, including the White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany, who was suspended for linking to the scandal.

Even inside Twitter, the move raised serious concerns over the company serving as a censor for the Biden campaign. Global Comms Brandon Borrman who asked if  the company could “truthfully claim that this is part of the policy” for barring posts and suspending users.

Baker quickly jumped in to support the censorship and said that “it’s reasonable for us to assume that they may have been [hacked] and that caution is warranted.”

Keep in mind that there was never any evidence that this material was hacked. Moreover, there was no evidence of Russian involvement in the laptop. Indeed, U.S. intelligence quickly rejected the Russian disinformation claim.

However, Baker insisted that there was a “reasonable” assumption that Russians were behind another major scandal. Faced with a major scandal implicating a Joe Biden in the corrupt selling of access to foreign figures (including some with foreign intelligence associations), Baker’s natural default was to kill the story and stop others from sharing the allegations.

The released documents may show why Twitter was so eager to hire Baker despite his role in the Russian collusion controversies. What likely would have been a liability for most companies seemed an actual draw for Twitter. For censors and political operatives in Twitter, Baker likely seemed like a “made man” for a company committed to systemic censorship. He would be working with the chief legal officer at the company, Vijaya Gadde, who functioned as the company’s chief censor.  Gadde was widely reviled by free speech advocates for her dismissal of free speech principles and open political bias.

Not unexpectedly, Gadde and Baker would play prominent roles in the suppression of the Hunter Biden scandal. There was hardly a need to round up “the usual suspects” in the suppression scandal when Musk took over the company. Both lawyers swatted down internal misgivings to bury a story that could well have made the difference in the close 2020 election.

It is striking how many of the figures and institutions involved in Russian collusion claims are within six degrees of James Baker. Not only did Baker work closely with fired FBI director James Comey and other key figures at the Justice Department, but he was an acquaintance of key Clinton figures like Sussmann who pushed the false collusion allegations. He was also hired by Brookings Institution, which also has a curious Bacon-like role in the origins and development of the false Russian collusion allegations.

None of these means that Baker was the driving force of the scandals. To the contrary, Baker earned his bones in Washington as a facilitator, a reliable ally when it came to the business of the Beltway. It is hardly a surprise that Baker found a home at Twitter where “caution” was always “warranted” in dealing with potentially damaging stories for Democratic interests.

  4. The FBI connection is key point. FBI had the laptop. Baker certainly knew they had it and also knew it wasn’t bogus. They could have corroborated or at least have been asked to by a journalist if any are left.

      Congress’s power of impeachment is an important check on the Executive and Judicial Branches, recognized by the Framers as a crucial tool for holding government officers accountable for violations of the law and abuses of power.3 Congress has most notably employed the impeachment tool against the President and federal judges, but all federal civil officers are subject to removal by impeachment.4 The Senate has also concluded (by majority vote) on various occasions that an official impeached while in office remains subject to trial, conviction, and imposition of the penalty of disqualification even after he or she leaves office.5 The practice of impeachment makes clear, however, that Members of Congress are not civil officers subject to impeachment and removal.6

      While judicial precedents inform the effective substantive meaning of various provisions of the Constitution, impeachment is at bottom a unique political process largely unchecked by the judiciary. While the meaning of treason and bribery is relatively clear, the scope of high crimes and misdemeanors lacks a formal definition and has been fleshed out over time, in a manner perhaps analogous to the common law, through the practice of impeachments in the United States Congress.

      7 The type of behavior that qualifies as impeachable conduct, and the circumstances in which impeachment is an appropriate remedy for such actions, are thus determined by, among other things, competing political interests, changing institutional relationships among the three branches of government, and legislators’ interaction with and accountability to the public.8 The weight of historical practice, rather than judicial precedent, is thus central to understanding the nature of impeachment in the United States.

    The release of the files showed nothing new. It pointed out that even Taibbi didn’t see any evidence that the government was ordering twitter or Facebook to censor stories or “evidence” of corruption or influence peddling.

    What it did show was that the FBI was warning social media about possible Russian “hack and leaks” being disseminated prior to the election. At the time nobody knew for sure if the claims were true or not. Hindsight is always going to be 20/20. What the files do expose is that twitter had a difficult decision to make and they had policies in place at the time that they did adhere to. Nothing they did was illegal or a deliberate attempt to help a campaign “win the election”. They had reason to believe it was a genuine and serious issue. At the time it was believed Russia was attempting to influence the election by doing what they did in 2016.

    The allegations of influence peddling and “corruption” against Biden are just that. Allegations. Mere influence peddling is not illegal or a crime. Turley knows this, but he paddles that “scandal” so he can keep his readership numbers up and is playing to the Fox News narrative that there is something sinister going on without a shred of evidence.

      The FBI had the harddrives since 2019. They were aware of the contents and had plenty of time to authenticate them.

      It knew or shoudl have know, that they were authentic, not russian disinformation.

      The SOURCE of the information does not matter, What matters is whether the information is authentic.
      Truth is truth.

However, they didn’t skew the results to a high enough denominator because they totally underestimated the amount of votes Trump received. They failed to recognize just how unpopular HRC was in the eyes of Americans, making getting to the polls a priority and a first time for many.

    The FBI confiscated The Laptop in Oct. 2019 and, according to ‘officials familiar with these matters’, continues to ‘probe that question.’

    Update: Shop owner Mac Issac has recently offered to provide the FBI with a ‘fresh copy’ of the hard drive in case the FBI lost the one they have.

      I am bothered that no prosecutions of anyone involved in the collusion delusion occurred.
      Obviously the actions of all these people were immorally and politically corrupt.

      But I do not see how they were criminal. The strongest criminal claim is a criminal violation of civil rights.
      Given that the courts shot down Pages efforts to allege a non-criminal violation I do not see such a claim getting out of the starting gate.

      And no matter what this ends up with DC judges and DC juries.

          What Musk exposed is simultaneously two things.
          First it is a yawn. There is almost nothing Musk has revealed that more than half the country did not already know to an incredibly high degree of certainty.
          But it is also radical at the same time. There is no burglary or ordinary criminal act, but in every other way what is exposed is watergate on steroids. It is PROOF of massive moral corruption in order to deceive voters and win an election.

          It should not be possible in this country – or any free country, but it did happen and it was legal.

          There are some grounds for lawsuits – those banned have what should be an excellent torts claim of third party contract interference and violation of civil rights against the DNC and Biden campaign.

          But the HUGE takeaway is that unarguably democrats CHEATED in 2020. Everything that is legal is not moral.
          And this conduct was legal but massively immoral.

          This SHOULD obliterate any trust by all moral people of democrats, of the left, of the media, of our institutions.

While FBI General Cousel James Baker was irrefutably involved in seditious FBI election interference dating back to 2016 associated with milking the Russia-Collusion cow dry while knowing it was a DNC/Clinton-concocted HOAX, and while blame for the 2020 censorship travesty is being placed on Baker and an assortment of people working at various levels of social media and government, there’s a curious absence of blame being aimed at then-Attorney General Bill Barr, under whose DOJ the entire FBI worked while Baker was supervising the FBI’s 2020 election interference.

    After all, one must remember that it’s not as if people didn’t point out to Barr that some pretty-wildly-illegal stuff was happening WHILE IT WAS HAPPENING.

    Barr spent a great deal of his time as AG in the Trump administration giving speeches to religious and police organizations, while clearly not devoting nearly enough time to his JOB, which should have included investigating what the heck was going on at the FBI in the aftermath of the Russia Colllusion Hoax and what might be transpiring in the run up to the Fake election of 2020, which Barr REFUSED to investigate before it happened AND after it happened. Instead, Barr allowed all of this seditious nonsense to happen while he ridiculously pronounced the 20202 election as being free of fraud, which is an unsupported claim that Barr continues to assert to this day.

    Where’s the article about Bill Barr and his grotesque dereliction of duty (at the very least) or (more likely) active conninvance that allowed all of this to happen right under his former-lawyer-for-the-CIA nose?

    1. Excellent reminder about Bill Barr, hole-and-corner operative extraordinaire. During his entire term and suppressed significant and apparently valid information that could damage Democratic interests. Not only that, he didn’t fulfill his promise to evaluate the information he was suppressing. The Rudy Guiliani and Chanel Rion/OANN investigation of Ukraine/ Biden corruption was professionally done and provided a mountain of evidence to support indictments. Barr didn’t made no comment on it but instead said he would turn it over to a diligent FBI team located in an abandoned coal mining town in Pennsylvania for validation. Nothing was ever heard about it again.

      Barr also claimed that he saw no evidence of interference in the 2020 election. He never claimed to have looked for any, so like the famous three monkeys, Barr saw no evidence, heard no evidence and spoke no evidence of electoral interference. Technically correct but contemptible.

He was not only derelict, but he sacrificed his honor and name for WHAT! There had to be something stopping him from investigating the case, that makes me wonder.
