The International Conference on Family Planning

The world's largest gathering of family planning and reproductive health professionals

The International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP) is more than a conference.

It’s also a platform, a movement, and a community.

Since the first ICFP in Kampala, Uganda in 2009, the International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP) has served as a strategic inflection point for the global reproductive health community, providing a global stage for countries, organizations, and individuals to make important commitments and celebrate achievements as the world’s largest scientific conference on family planning and reproductive health.

ICFP has become much more than a conference – it has grown into a platform for researchers, advocates, governments and communities; a movement towards achieving access to family planning for all; and a growing community guided by the spirit of partnership, inclusivity, innovation and scientific rigor.

As the larger family planning community looks “beyond 2020” to realign our goals and reposition for the future of family planning, ICFP 2022 will be a strategic benchmark as the community prepares to recommit to a goal of universal access by 2030.

A movement

ICFP is a movement towards universal access to family planning services, contraception, and other SRHR resources. For nearly 12 years, the ICFP community has worked together to move family planning and reproductive health priorities to the center of development.

A platform

ICFP is a global platform from which countries, local governments, organizations, and individuals can make public commitments to family planning and can be recognized for their achievements. Dozens of side events are organized around the conference by the hundreds of attending institutions and organizations from around the world.

A community

ICFP is a strong community of advocates, political leaders, scientists, researchers, policymakers, practitioners, faith leaders, and youth leaders exchanging ideas and working together to innovate and progress family planning programming, advocacy, and research.

ICFP’s History

See our path towards universal access to family planning.

2009 | Kampala, Uganda

Great progress has been made since the inaugural ICFP in Kampala, Uganda, in 2009, which urged the family planning community to scale up best practices with effective programs and policy changes.

2011 | Dakar, Senegal

Two years later, the 2011 ICFP convened the family planning field in Dakar, Senegal, to focus on improving family planning services in Francophone Africa.

2013 | Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Following the successful launch of Family Planning 2020 (now FP2030) during the 2012 London Summit on Family Planning, the 2013 ICFP brought together more than 3,400 delegates in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to celebrate progress made toward achieving “Full Access, Full Choice.”

2016 | NUSA DUA, Indonesia

Held in Indonesia, a leader in innovative family planning programming, the 2016 ICFP attracted more than 3,500 delegates and participants from about 100 countries.

2018 | Kigali, Rwanda

In 2018 ICFP returned to Africa, hosting more than 4,000 people in Kigali, Rwanda, to focus on family planning’s returns on investment. The theme of the 2018 ICFP was “Investing for a Lifetime of Returns.” This theme title spoke to the various returns on investment family planning provides, from education and empowerment to economic growth and environmental health. Underlying many of the conference sessions was a focus on the ways in which countries can harness the benefits of the demographic dividend to reap these returns on the macro and micro levels, and the demographic dividend was a highlighted track.

2022 | Pattaya City, Thailand

The 2022 theme, “Family Planning & Universal Health Coverage: Innovate. Collaborate. Accelerate.” underscores our belief that family planning should be a core component of universal health coverage. Not only is access to family planning and reproductive health services a pillar of good personal health, it is also a critical component of a country’s economic health. ICFP 2022 will be a strategic benchmark as the community prepares to recommit to a goal of universal access by 2030.
