LANSING, Mich., March 5, 2021 — This week, members of the Michigan Legislative Latino Caucus (MLLC) met to hold leadership elections for Michigan’s 101st legislative session. State Reps. Mary Cavanagh (D-Redford Twp.) and Darrin Camilleri (D-Trenton) were selected to serve as Chair and Vice-Chair, respectively. State Sen. Erika Geiss (D-Taylor) will serve as Secretary and Rep. Alex Garza (D-Taylor) will serve as Treasurer.
“I am honored to have been chosen by my colleagues to lead the Latino Caucus,” said Cavanagh. “Our strength as Michiganders comes not only from our shared experiences but also from celebrating and learning from our differences. It is my hope that while serving as Chair, we can create new opportunities for Michiganders to come together and solve the challenges facing our state with the wealth of knowledge and perspectives we each have to offer.”
The Michigan Latino Legislative Caucus is a bicameral caucus of legislators dedicated to promoting legislative initiatives that reflect the betterment of Michigan’s Latino community, including economic development, healthcare, education, civic engagement, and civil rights.
“For so many years, we’ve seen a lack of Latino representation in our state government—the first Latino state representative wasn’t even elected until 1998,” said Camilleri. “I’m honored to serve as Vice-Chair as we continue the Latino Caucus’s important work of building power and better representation for our community across the state.”
The MLLC includes Michigan Legislators who identify as Latino and those who represent districts with Latino populations and have shown a commitment to supporting the issues and policies most important to Michigan Latinos.
