On a summer night in 1932, twelve-year-old Joel Fitchett wanders into an East Texas diner badly beaten and carrying his unconscious brother, Clancy. Though both boys claim they have no memory of what happened, the horrific details are etched into their minds as deep as the scar left across Joel's face.

Thirteen years later, both men still struggle with the aftershocks of that long-ago night and the pact they made to hide the truth. When they find themselves at the center of a murder investigation, they make a decision that will change everything. A second lie, a second pact and for a time, a second chance.

In 1991 college student, Garrison Stark, travels to Texas chasing a rumor that Clancy Fitchett is his biological grandfather. Clancy has been missing since 1946 and Garrison hopes to find him and in doing so, find a family. What he doesn't expect to discover is a tangle of secrets spanning sixty years involving Clancy, Joel and the woman they both loved, Lorraine.

Told in alternating timelines from World War II to 1992, Enemies of Doves is a tale of family secrets, jealousy and deception perfect for fans of Kate Morton and Katherine Webb.

ENEMIES OF DOVES by Shanessa Gluhm is a historical mystery/suspense that spans the lives of two brothers beginning in 1932 Texas while intertwining with one brother’s biological grandson’s search in 1991 for his grandfather told in alternating timelines. The mystery and characters pulled me into the story effortlessly and there was no way I was going to stop reading until “The End”.

In a small town in East Texas in 1932, twelve-year-old Joel Fitchett carries his unconscious brother, Clancy home before he passes out. When he wakes up in the hospital, both boys tell their parents and the police they have no memory of how Joel ended up with a deep cut etched down his entire face. They have sworn to never tell about that day, but it will define them for the rest of their lives.

With the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Joel is classified as 4F and stays at home working, while Clancy joins the Marines and is off to fight the Japanese. Clancy returns home but, he is not the same and is having difficulty adjusting back to civilian life. Then the brothers’ lives implode as one brother will be charged with murder. For the second time the brothers make a pact that will change both of their lives.

In 1991, Garrison Stark is in search of a rumor that Clancy Fitchett is his biological grandfather. Clancy has been missing since 1946 and Joel is in prison having been charged with murder, so Garrison goes to him for a lead. What he discovers is a tangled web of family secrets, jealously and lies spanning sixty years.

I found this book to be absolutely perfect. The characters in both timelines were fully fleshed, realistic, flawed human beings that drew me in and would not let me go. The author wrote family dynamics, jealousies and secrets that kept surprising me throughout. While I always felt sympathy for the life Joel had with his scar, when Clancy came back from the war I was in tears because terrible scars are not always physical. As Garrison worked to uncover Joel, Clancy and Lorraine’s past secrets in the present day, I was continually as surprised as he was by each revelation. With the complexity of the characters and the perfect pace of the mystery, I find it difficult to believe this is written by a debut novelist, and yet it is.

I highly recommend Enemies of Doves!

This is an addictive read! The story seamlessly flows between two timelines, and I immediately became attached to characters in both story lines. Enemies of Doves is the kind of book you keep thinking about all day. I didn’t want it to end, but I couldn’t wait to find out what happened. This novel reveals deep scars - both physical and emotional – left on the characters in the wake of each other’s decisions. The twists are unpredictable, and the characters are unforgettable. You won’t want to put it down!

Just finished this book 5 minutes ago and had to rush to login to Goodreads because I CANNOT recommend this book enough for those who love mysteries, thrillers, historical fiction, or romance! It has it all. Multiple twists at the end kept me at the edge of my seat, and the character development and multiple narrators throughout the book helped me relate to all characters that much more. This book deserves more praise, especially as Gluhm's debut. I look forward to reading more from her! 10/10 recommend!

So good! This book is filled with twists and turns that can easily keep you up all night reading, but perhaps more than that, this book tells the heartbreaking story of people who love (and hurt) so very deeply. The characters were all written so well and so honestly, I already miss spending time with them.
The many nods/references Gluhm used from all kinds of great literature throughout the novel was done so well. On numerous occasions, it was exactly what was needed to create rich and beautiful imagery for the scene.
The mystery, the suspense, the shocking revelations, make this novel one to add to your list, for sure.
If you are searching for your next great read, look no further than Gluhm's Enemies of Doves!

This book captured me and kept me intrigued wanting to know more from beginning to end. The story crosses between two timelines where Gluhm develops her characters and intertwines their lives to reveal how they fit together and the secrets they hold. The twists and turns feed you bits of information that keep you guessing to the very last word. I couldn't wait to discover their truths, but never wanted the story to end. Makes you want to stay up and read all night!

Warning, make sure your life is in order before reading this book! It will literally capture and consume your life completely to the end. Rich characters with ripe regrets running the full gamut of the potential would of, could of's for the decisions they made. Questions will continue to pop up throughout as to who are the real "Enemies of Dove's". Superb story intertwined within the past and present that deepens your commitment to reach the finale.

Thank you so much to LSBBT, the publisher, and the author for providing me with a finished copy in exchange for an honest review.

“IT WASN’T HOW WE WERE BORN OR RAISED THAT MADE US THE MEN WE ARE TODAY. IT WAS WHAT HAPPENED THAT DAY THAT SET THE REST OF OUR LIVES IN MOTION.”

In less than 320 pages, Shanessa Gluhm’s powerful debut delivers a family saga that captures everything I love about storytelling. With fully formed and fleshed-out characters, a narrative pacing that keeps you hungry for answers, and themes that could resonate with readers young and old, Enemies of Doves provides a captivating fictional story that felt entirely tangible.

Maybe it’s because the action is divided over the course of 60 years of the characters’ history with tidbits being gleaned from major and minor players alike, but consuming this story felt like learning my own family history from a beloved grandparent. I could envision being told the tumultuous tale during a family reunion with chatty aunts and uncles chiming in with those supplemental details that truly round out a story. And not because I can personally relate to some of the heinous tidbits revealed in this decade-spanning novel, but rather because of Gluhm’s empathetic exploration of the human condition. Her ability to portray a character as they see themself, as they’re seen by others, and how that affects and shapes their life’s narrative was truly impressive given the amount of years she needed to address with so few pages to do so. It allows you, as the reader, to form true bonds to these characters and see how tiny, seemingly insignificant choices can accumulate into decisions that will leave lifelong scars.

“LIVING THINGS SHOULDN’T BE CAGED…”

Tackling everything from racism, poverty, PTSD, war, child abuse, prison, and our duty to our fellow man, Enemies of Doves packs a punch in nearly every chapter. Thanks to the synopsis, I knew I was diving into a book full of secrets surrounding a duo of brothers, but I did not expect the subtle social commentary hidden within its pages. Some topics were addressed with just a sprinkled line or two, while others evolved throughout the book. What blew me away was how the issues plaguing the characters in the 1940s could very easily be written about modern-day characters. Perhaps it’s these universal themes that gave me such a real connection to the material, but I have a strong feeling that this book will linger long after it’s placed back on the shelf.

“A SECOND LIE, A SECOND PACT AND — HOPEFULLY — A SECOND CHANCE.”

There’s so much to talk about when it comes to this book. The incident that sparked the initial secret between brothers and what’s kept them tied to it for decades. The love triangle that developed between them during WWII. The aftermath of trauma and how it changes people. The lengths we’re willing to go for a loved one wronged. A grandson’s search for truth and a new family to call his own. Or the mega plot twists Gluhm employed to keep readers on their toes.

Whether it’s one or all of these topics, Enemies of Doves is clearly a book you’ll want to discuss long after the epilogue is read. All is not what it seems and I personally think it’s best to go in with as little information as possible and let the story take you where it will. If you’re in the market for a murder mystery full of secrets, sacrifice, and heart, I suggest aligning up with this debut.

TW: racism and usage of racial slurs, PTSD, depression, child abuse, murder, violence, infidelity, and more. Please feel free to send me a message or comment if you'd like a more thorough breakdown of themes addressed in the novel!

This book held me captive from the beginning until the end.  I loved the span of 6 decades that covered the lives of Clancy, Joel, Lorraine, and Garrison, which gave me the opportunity to get to know each character and how they fit into each other's lives.  I was also drawn into this book because of the location - East Texas, specifically Longview.  I lived for a time in this town and I could imagine this sleepy little town before it grew to the size it is now.

This book is about family, relationships, and has a bit of a mystery twist too.  Garrison is trying to find his grandfather Clancy based on something his grandmother said to him. This sets him on a trail in the early 1990s before technology and where research means looking at microfiche instead of the internet.  What he won't know is that the truth will be right in front of him in more ways than one.  As secrets are revealed throughout the book, I was kept on the end of my seat wondering what could possibly be revealed next.

Joel and Clancy endured a lot as children including an event that they kept secret until near the end of the book. These twists are part of what kept me engaged in the story.  How did Joel get the scar on his face? What really happened that day? The answers are quite surprising and explain a little more about their fear of birds. There is also the question of how Joel ended up in prison.  Was he really guilty of killing his father? Again, another plot twist I didn't see coming when all is revealed.

A good story is not without some romance or at least an inkling. Lorraine is loved by both Joel and Clancy, but Clancy is the one that captures her heart with their shared love of books. Their relationship is not smooth and while he is away fighting in the war, Joel and Lorraine become closer. It is hard when Clancy comes back because he was missing for many months and suffers from battle fatigue, or what we know today as PTSD. The scenes where Clancy gets lost in the past reflect what it feels like for those that have PTSD and the flashbacks they endure reliving horrific events over and over.  Will this end his relationship with Lorraine?

Garrison has a girlfriend, Amber, back home. While he is in Longview, he meets Molly who is just as intrigued by his potential family and believes that Joel doesn't belong in prison.  Working together sparks something between the two.  Will he stay with Amber or move forward with Molly?  I enjoyed watching Garrison and Molly's friendship bloom. There are some plots twists regarding Molly and her family that were unexpected.

This is a debut book and it is one that I highly recommend and give it 5 paws up.  I don't know what the author might have in store for her next book but if it is anything like this one it will be a winner.

Enemies of Doves is the type of novel that keeps you up all night reading, telling yourself "just one more page" until your alarm goes off. Rarely do I not have a book figured out by half way through, but Gluhm's novel kept throwing me for a loop in the best ways. The story is mystery, but is so much more: a true love story, a story about family, lies, truths and sacrifice. The Fitchett's didn't have an easy life growing up, but they took care of each other. Garrison didn't know what he was going to find in his quest for family, but he found more than he expected, and the way their stories intertwine is shocking and comforting. Can't wait for Gluhm's next novel.

You are going to want to clear your schedules for this one. ”Enemies of Doves” is a captivating story of love, family, secrets, and betrayal. It flows so flawlessly between two timelines tying the story together into a beautiful seamless masterpiece. The characters and their stories are so captivating! You will definitely find yourself reading into the wee hours of the night! I found myself not wanting to put it down, but not wanting it to be over. It is definitely one I will read over and over again.

This is a great suspenseful mystery, with plenty of twists that keep you guessing, the author had me gripped from page one. In 1932, Joel Fitchett wanders into a diner in East Texas, Joel is 12 years old and has obviously been badly beaten, he is also carrying his brother Clancy, who is unconscious. Thirteen years later the two brothers are plagued with horrific memories of that night and Joel has been left physically scared on his face but the two still deny to police that they remember anything having made a pact together to hide the truth. Joel and Clancy then find themselves at the centre of a murder investigation and enter into a second pact, with another lie hoping this will give them a second chance.
The story is told in alternating timelines from World War II to 1992. The storyline continues in, 1991 and Garrison Stark, a college student travels to Texas to find Clancy Fitchett who has been missing since 1946 and who he believes maybe his biological grandfather. What Garrison uncovers is a tangle of secrets spanning over sixty years involving brothers Clancy and Joel and Lorraine, the woman they both appear to have loved.
This novel had me hooked from page one and I devoured it as I literally could not put this book down, a sign of a great read. It has a fast paced storyline which flows well and the narrative is well written, I liked how the story was told in two different timelines. The story is all about family secrets, jealousy and deception and I found it a five star read.

A dual timeline story of sibling rivalry and family secrets. The 1930's, Joel and Clancy Fitchett are holding on to secrets, heartache, and family disfunction. And then there is Lorraine smack in the middle. The 1990's, Garrison Stark is in search of his grandfather, Clancy Fitchett. Hoping to connect with family. Clancy has been missing since the 1940's. What Garrison finds is secrets than span many years. This was an excellent story. A historical mystery full of suspense and twist that I never saw coming. I was glued to it. A remarkable debut.

What a page turner!

Families, one of the greatest mysteries out there! As many of us are forced home during these strange times in America, we are finding out just how deep our love and commitments to family truly are. This book captured my attention and held it through the very end with the interesting characters and twisting plot lines. I simply could NOT put it down. I look forward to many MORE from Shanessa Gluhm!

I don't typically read mysteries. Most I have read are often entirely predictable and even campy. Enemies of Doves is neither. From the very start you're pulled into the mystery surrounding the Fitchett brothers. Gluhm keeps you guessing until the very end. Her writing is evocative and descriptive, making you feel the sweltering heat of East Texas through the pages. I enjoyed every twist and turn. This story is griping, intriguing, and entertaining, I highly recommend it!

The character development was phenomenal. The alternating timelines are always one of my favorite reads and this book is definitely one of my favorites. I was sad to come to the end of the book knowing it would be difficult to find another book to enjoy as much as I enjoyed “Enemies Of Doves.” It will keep you reading and wanting more.

Enemies of Doves by Shanessa Gluhm is a real surprise package, in the best possible way. This is Ms. Gluhm’s debut novel, so I wasn’t sure what to expect- but the blurb sounded intriguing so I took a chance and jumped right in. What I found was an intricately woven story full of wonderfully detailed and descriptive scenes that spun this story into a real web of intrigue. Full of suspense, family dynamics, secrets, mystery drama, jealousy, deception, regrets, emotion, love, lies, the truth, and sensitive topics, which all unfolds over duel timelines- made this an unputdownable read.
I won’t get into the storyline here, because I don’t want to spoil it for you. I also think some books are worth diving into a little “blind” and letting the story surprise you. This is one of those books.
I am highly anticipating Ms. Gluhm’s next novel, and can’t wait to see what she has in store for us!

Thank you, Shanessa Gluhm!

"That night brought more memories. And if memories weren’t enough, in came the ghosts."

It isn’t often that a mystery can keep readers guessing until its conclusion but Enemies of Doves, the debut novel by author Shanessa Gluhm, not only maintains the suspense but does so with intersecting narratives and timelines, unexpected twists and turns, and a well concealed ending.

The tangled web of family secrets and lies plays out over the span of fifty years. At the core of the story is the bond between two brothers, Joel and Clancy Fitchett, whose suppressed memory of a violent act has left both of them emotionally scarred and one with a physical reminder of the incident. Their relationship is complex, with feelings of resentment, anger, jealousy, regret, and self-sacrifice affecting how they perceive and interact with one another. The two brothers struggle to not only maintain their pact of secrecy about the incident but their need for love, acceptance, and belonging. Complicating matters is their attraction to the same woman, Lorraine Applewhite, and the murder of their domineering and abusive father. Tom Fitchett’s murder will lead to Joel’s imprisonment and the disappearance of Clancy and Lorraine.

Fast forward fifty years later. College student Garrison Stark experiences the painful loss of family when a terrible car accident claims the lives of his parents and his grandmother succumbs to the ravages of Alzheimer’s disease. Before she passes away, however, she intimates that Clancy is his true biological grandfather. Longing for family, Garrison sets out to find him.

His search for the truth begins in the library archives where he is introduced to Molly Hamilton, another college student whose course curriculum has her researching the Fitchett murder. She is convinced that Joel is innocent of the crime. Due to their mutual interest in Joel and Clancy, the two agree to help one another.

To find Clancy Garrison will also interview Joel in prison. The initial meeting doesn’t end well, but Joel is just as interested in locating Lorraine as Garrison is in finding his brother, which leads to more meetings between the two and the disclosure that someone has been putting money into Joel’s prison account over the years, and he is convinced that it is her.

Garrison’s obsession with unraveling the case and possibly locating the only remaining member of his family will destroy his engagement to his girlfriend Amber, ignite romantic feelings for Molly, and uncover hidden identities and familial relationships, the revelation of which could threaten her. Molly has no inkling of her linkage to the case beyond her academic pursuits and desire to free an innocent man, or the evil that exists within her own family.

Author Shanessa Gluhm, in her very first outing as a novelist, has written a multi-layered narrative of unrequited love, child abuse, dementia, murder, PTSD, secrets, lies, and regrets. Enemies of Doves not only seamlessly weaves all these elements together, but engages you from the very beginning, doesn’t come full circle until the very end, and leaves you thinking about it long after its completion.

I received an advanced copy of Enemies of Doves in exchange for my review.

The story sets off in 1932 on a summer night for two brothers, Joel and Clancy Fitchett. Clancy is unconscious and Joel is the older brother carrying him to rescue. They both “don’t remember” what happened but Joel has a permanent reminder in the form of a face scar.
Thirteen years down the line, they’re still experiencing tremors of that ill-fated night as they’ve made a forever pact amongst the two of them. In the middle of a murder investigation, the brothers decide a course of action that changes their lives forever.
In 1991, college pupil Gary Stark, embarks on a journey to Texas where he believes he’s found his long-lost biological grandfather in Clancy. Clancy’s been missing since 1946 but Gary wants a family in finding his grandfather. Unbeknownst to him, he’s about to discover more than he’s bargained for in sixty years of secrets Joel, Clancy and the love of their life, Lorraine have hidden from the world.
This book has you traveling from WWII to 1992 where we discover concealment, solitude, resentment, and deceitfulness from the fans of these authors.
This is the best thriller and crime book I’ve read in awhile. I love the layers of the story as the mystery of it unfolds through different time periods. It’s fun and addictive to read on a multitude of levels. Fantastic writing from the authors as well. In this almost-realistic feel, I found it inspirational at how much the characters were able to overcome and live through. This was definitely a page-turner. Haunting and unpredictable, it took me to places I never knew I could go. I've cried through some pages as well. Action-packed with the way it took us through different times with the characters. Tragic in what these characters had to endure in so many ways. The story is so original and twisted, it leaves you craving more of each page.

Absolutely amazing! I fell deep into the novel “Enemies of Doves,” as it surrounded me with excitement, anticipation and even sorrow as the story unfolded. The author, Shanessa Gluhm gave the novel so much care in getting the perfect words on the pages to hold my attention. The alternating timelines between 1941 and 1991 makes this story even more captivating.

I. Could. Not. Put. It. Down!

College student, Garrison Starks wants to find his biological Grandfather but the journey is not an easy task since his Grandfather has been missing since 1946. Finding the answers of his origin brings a series of more questions that has Garrison wondering if he should continue his search for the truth or let family secrets die.

I can't believe this was Shanessa Gluhm's debut novel! The cover is stunning; the story can definitely be seen through the design. I love it! The alternating timelines was perfect; flowing smoothly from one time period to the other. I can't recommend this novel enough. If you're a reader that loves a good mystery with lots of twists, don't hesitate to grab this book now!

Once you start this you will find every reason in the world to put off doing anything except finish this book. It was such an easy read and the characters were so real it felt like you were reading stories that could have been your relatives from days gone by. Such a great story line. It was my 55th wedding anniversary today and gave myself a present, to sit and finish this book I started last night. It was a great present to myself. Needless to say I loved this book. Enemies of Doves by Shanessa Gluhm

5 +++++ Stars. PHENOMENAL

Not sure where to begin! Is it really possible that this is this author's first book?? This shocks me because this book felt like it was written by someone that has many best sellers under their belt.

I have managed to read this in one sitting, it wasn't easy because it's a Saturday and my only day off but once I started I COULD NOT put it down, and honestly with the world on lockdown what else did I have to do besides clean, do laundry, pay bills, ADULT? I am so full of emotions after finishing..I sat and stared thinking it all through and can't figure out if I'm happy or sad. This should be a movie, I watched it all play out feeling like I was watching and I hated when it was over. I suspected a couple things not quite early on but later in the book because there were a couple statements made that made me think...whoa, wait a minute and I was right on one of those, but the other twists and turns blind sided me but made so much sense after I was finished. This author wrote in two different timelines, and this is something I normally do not like but I couldn't wait to get back to each of them all the way through. This is a story of family and the bonds that hold those families together, and the lengths families will go to to protect those bonds. It's about secrets and promises made, it's about bad choices and Love, Anger, Jealousy, and a whole lot of Mystery and plenty of Suspense.

Not even going to try to touch on this story, you truly truly have to read it. It is probably one of my favorite books so far this year and I hope this author is writing right now because I can not wait to pick up another book by her and many more after.

Incredible Story!! Can't wait to read it again!

Enemies of Doves
By Shanessa Gluhm
5 out of 5 stories

The story Enemies of Doves by Shanessa Gluhm is a book that has mystery and suspense. It is a story that pulled me in from the beginning and didn’t let me go until the final page. The book had me turning pages wondering what was going to happen next. The story does a wonderful job of switching back and forth between timelines. It had me trying to put together what was happening and gives you just enough info that I couldn’t put it down for very long. I just had to know how it ended. I enjoyed reading about the characters of Joel and Clancy Fitchett, Lorraine, and Garrison Stark. Each one has their part to play in the book and I found that my first impressions about them changed as the story progressed. The book and characters came alive with each page that I read, and I found myself thinking about both even after I had read the entire story. My emotions went up and down all the way through. The book has twists that I did not see coming. Don’t miss out on a story that is mysterious and entertaining. I highly recommend reading it.

Enemies of Doves immediately pulls the reader into the mystery surrounding the Fitchett Brothers and kept me intrigued, wanting to know more but not wanting the book to end! It’s a story about two brothers, secrets, betrayals, sacrifices and ultimately love. I came to feel I knew each character and I felt compassion and empathy for each characters plight. The book is full of twists and turns that will have the reader gasping with shock but the surprise ending is never divulged.

Enemies of Doves also brings the reader face to face with some unpleasant situations like alcoholism, child abuse, and PTSD. Ms. Gluhm deals with each of these situations in a realistic way but keeps the story on track and maintains the entertainment aspect of the book.

Enemies of Doves is a very well written debut novel from this authoress. Storytelling is an art and one Ms. Gluhm has mastered!

Enemies of Doves by Shanessa Gluhm. Wow what an amazing way to be introduced to a new author. From page one I was completely captured and couldn’t put this book down. This story is filled to the top with suspense, drama and all the emotions you could ask for. The author does a wonderful job of writing a story that truly comes alive before your eyes. The characters are complex and relatable, each one drawing you further into their world. I found myself trying to read both faster to see what happen next and slower to make it last longer. It’s a well thought out and paced nicely never feeling rushed or lacking anything. I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to see where the author takes readers next. If you’re looking for a new author I highly recommend giving this amazing book a try! Five stars all the way and highly recommended.

This book had me excited from the moment I read the synopsis. I knew it was going to be a good read and I wasn’t let down. I’ve never read a book by Shanessa Gluhm, and I’m so glad I gave this one a go. It was well worded, great plots and even more amazing characters. IF I could give this more than 5 stars I would hands down. In this tale we meet Joel, Clancey, Lorraine, Garrison and Molly. There are other important characters you’ll meet, but these are basically our mains. Part of the effect this book had on me was because it’s set in two different time frames. Joel, Clancey and Lorraine are whose lives we are in when the time setting is 1940’s. Then we jump to the 1990's with Garrison and Molly. This book has it all- Love, loss, bad guys, plots to keep you interested and so much in between.
