Charlie Wade

After a decade under his direction, Charlie Wade has turned the University of Hawai‘i men’s volleyball program into a national champion after the Rainbow Warriors captured back-to-back NCAA titles in 2021 and '22. UH has made six NCAA Tournament trips in the past nine years under Wade, who also guided the Warriors to Big West Tournament titles in 2019, '22 and '23.

  • Guided Hawai‘i to four consecutive NCAA title matches from 2019-23, a first for any school since the 1990s.
  • Led UH to a second straight Big West tournament title and third overall in 2023 while being named Big West Coach of the Year for the second straight season.
  • Directed UH to back-to-back NCAA titles in 2021 and '22, the latter of which was a straight-set win over rival Long Beach State in Los Angeles, Calif.
  • Won the program's first national title in 2021 with a convincing straight-set win over BYU in the finals in Columbus, Ohio.
  • UH finished the 2021 season with a 17-1 mark and its first undefeated conference record with a 10-0 mark in Big West play.
  • Second-winningest coach in program history with 269 career wins.
  • Led UH to four of the winningest seasons in program history, including a program-record 29 wins in 2023.
  • Guided UH to postseason play 10 times with trips to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and Big West Conference championship matches three consecutive seasons (2017-19), the latter of which resulted in the program's first-ever conference title.
  • In 2019, coached the program’s first conference champion after UH defeated Long Beach State in five-sets to capture the Big West crown and earned the program's first automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. 
  • Hawai‘i set an NCAA record with a 74-set win streak in 2019, obliterating the previous mark of 32 and recorded a new program-record with a 25-match win streak.
  • The 2022-23 teams also won 25 straight matches and set a new program-record 29-match home win streak.
  • In 2015, he directed the Warriors to their first NCAA Tournament berth in 13 years as UH finished with a 24-7 mark – its best since 2003. The Warriors were runner-up in the MPSF standings (18-4) while ascending to the No. 1 ranking for five weeks for the first time since 2004.
  • The 2017 squad posted a 27-6 mark and advanced to the national semifinals for the first time since time since 2002.
  • Recruited some of collegiate volleyball’s best international players – two-time All-American Jonas Umlauft of Germany, who led the nation in kills twice; three-time All-American Stijn van Tilburg of the Netherlands, three-time All-American and 2021 AVCA and VolleyballMag.com Player of the Year Rado Parapunov of Bulgaria, and three-time All-American and 2023 AVCA Player of the Year Jakob Thelle. 
  • Lured several of the state’s top recruits, including Punahou’s Kupono Fey and Moanalua High’s Kolby Kanetake and Austin Mautatia and more recently ‘Iolani's Cole Hogland and Punahou's Alaka‘i Todd. King Kekaulike High's Colton Cowell emerged as one of the nation's top outside hitters under Wade's tutelage.
  • A total of 21 student-athletes have received All-American honors under his tenure - Jonas Umlauft, Josh Walker, Brook Sedore, Taylor Averill, Jennings Franciskovic, Sinisa Zarkovic, Kolby Kanetake, Stijn van Tilburg, Larry Tuileta, Hendrik Mol, Joe Worsley, Patrick Gasman, Rado Parapunov, Gage Worsley, Colton Cowell, Jakob Thelle, Spyros Chakas, Guilherme Voss, Dimitrios Mouchlias, Chaz Galloway, and Brett Sheward. 
  • Parapunov and Thelle won multiple conference player of the year honors (Parapunov - 2020 & 2021, Thelle - 2022 & 2023).
  • Three players earned Academic All-America honors (Jonas Umlauft-2011, Stijn van Tilburg-2019, and Jakob Thelle-2022 & 2023) and two assistant coaches received AVCA National Assistant Coach of the Year honors (Josh Walker-2019 and Milan Zarkovic-2020 & 2023).
  • Under his tenure, UH has regained its title as national attendance leader, including a nation's-best 6,652 average in 2023, which was the highest since 1998.
  • Took over the program in 2010 and led the Warriors to a 19-10 mark and a trip to the MPSF Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2003. UH doubled its win total from the previous year and snapped a two-year postseason drought.
  • In 2011, he guided the Warriors to their second straight MPSF Tournament appearance and finished fifth in the final league standings.
  • Prior to his arrival, UH had missed postseason play the previous two seasons and suffered through three straight losing seasons.
 
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS
  • Spent 11 years on former Rainbow Wahine head coach Dave Shoji’s staff, including eight as associate coach.
  • Earned a reputation as a stout recruiter and master tactician. 
  • During his time on staff, the Rainbow Wahine won 11 conference titles, advanced to the NCAA Regionals 10 times, and made four NCAA Championship appearances.
  • UH posted a remarkable 160-1 conference mark and an overall record of 310-39 for an 89-percent winning percentage during his tenure.
  • In postseason competition, he helped guide the Rainbow Wahine to 11 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, six Regional Finals (1995, ’96, ’98, 2000, ’02, ’03), and four Final Fours (1996, 2000, ’02, ’03), including the national championship match in 1996. 
  • Helped coach eight All-Americans who earned 18 All-America certificates and two National Players of the Year (Angelica Ljungquist in 1996 and Kim Willoughby in 2003).
  • Served as head coach three times in Shoji’s absence and the Rainbow Wahine won all three matches.
  • In the summer of 2007, he coached the USA Volleyball Federation Senior Select Team which toured Argentina.
 
 
PRIOR TO UH
  • After an 11-year stint as assistant coach with the Hawai‘i women’s volleyball program, spent three seasons as the head women’s volleyball coach at the University of the Pacific.
  • Compiled a 38-46 record.
  • His teams improved 10 wins from his inaugural season to finish with an 18-9 record in 2007. That year, his squad won three tournament titles and defeated 20th-ranked Cal Poly.
  • In 1986, founded the Magnum Volleyball Club, which was regarded by many collegiate coaches as one of the top junior programs in the country. 
  • Served as head coach of the Anaheim, Calif., club and coached eventual Rainbow Wahine standouts Kristal Attwood, Kee Williams, Sarah Chase, Heather Bown and Jessica Sudduth and former UOP standout Tracy Chambers.
  • Also founded the Southern California Volleyball Institute in 1993 and served as its executive director. The 17,000-square-foot volleyball training facility featured four courts, offices, weight and training rooms and a pro shop.
  • During his first five years at UH, he also coached the Rainbow Asics club team, which featured Rainbow Wahine All-American Lily Kahumoku and former Minnesota setter and U.S. Olympian Lindsey Berg.
  • First collegiate coaching experience was at Cal State Fullerton, where he served as assistant coach while finishing his bachelor’s degree.
