Graves Statement on First Federal Construction Investment in the Morganza-to-the-Gulf Hurricane Protection System

U.S. Congressman Garret Graves released the following statement regarding the Humble Canal Floodgate Groundbreaking Ceremony today, a critical component of the Morganza-to-the-Gulf Hurricane Protection System. Graves has secured $410 million for the project to date, including $12.46 million specifically for the Humble Canal Floodgate.

"Today should confirm for thousands of families and businesses in south Louisiana that Morganza-to-the-Gulf is on its way to becoming a reality. Investments made before a storm, like Morganza, are not only the right solutions, they are the most cost-efficient for our government, our local homeowners, and our businesses. We need to see more groundbreakings and ribbon-cuttings instead of higher flood insurance rates," Graves said. "Our community has already invested more than $1 billion into this project, and I'm proud to have helped deliver more than $410 million to the project over the past two years, with an additional $31 million request into our congressional appropriators for next year. This groundbreaking is confirmation that we can turn dirt and deliver results, and we will continue fighting for more federal funding for Morganza so that the project can be completed at a rate that Louisiana taxpayers deserve."
