January 24 - Care Not Criminalization rally

Registration is closed for this event
The Campaign to Close Rikers is organizing a contingent to join dozens of other groups for the Care Not Criminalization rally at Mayor Adam's State of the City address. We need all hands on deck!

Since taking office in 2022, Mayor Adams has consistently favored the interests of the powerful and wealthy, implementing policies that disproportionately penalize and criminalize poor and working-class New Yorkers. Now, two years into Mayor Adams' mayoralty, as he faces multiple scandals and a record-low approval rating, Mayor Adams is attempting to gloss over his terrible record at his upcoming state of the city address.

While slashing funding for critical services, Mayor Adams found the necessary resources to offer historic raises for police and jail guards, flood the subways with police, and expand juvenile detention. The Mayor’s expansion of criminalization has included a revival of racially-biased stop-and-frisk practices and a huge expansion of low-level arrests. When coupled with cuts to preventative programs and failure to deliver on others, these practices are fueling a soaring youth detention rate, and a rising jail population at Rikers - including a growing proportion of people with serious mental health needs.

We know that the safest communities are the ones with the most resources, not the most law enforcement. Join us to reject Eric Adams harmful criminalization and austerity measures and to advocate for the care, justice, and resources our communities rightfully deserve!
