CLEVELAND, Ohio (WJW) – The Cleveland Division of Police Accident Investigation Unit is investigating a car crash that injured five members of the SWAT team.

It happened just before 3:30 a.m. Friday at St. Clair Ave. and E. 18th St.

The SWAT team was headed to a call when the van they were traveling in was hit by a car.

Several officers were trapped, according to police on the scene. The 38-year-old driver is accused of taking off after hitting the van.  He was later tracked down and arrested.

Police Union President Jeff Follmer is asking for prayers for the officers.

“We would appreciate prayers for these officers,” Follmer said.  “They are dedicated officers that always work hard to protect us.”

The five SWAT officers were treated at MetroHealth Medical Center, one of them remains hospitalized.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.
