About the Program

Eastern North Carolina Prevent Diabetes (ENCD) is a year-long program that is committed to providing Diabetes prevention tips and resources to participants across Region 10, a span of ten counties in Eastern North Carolina. The program offers classes led by Lifestyle Coaches in each county that give local participants an opportunity for accountability and demonstrate choices that lead to a healthier lifestyle. ENC Prevent Diabetes is a program for people that are at risk for developing diabetes.

Qualifications for the Program
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must have a Center for Disease Control and Prevention paper screener score of 9 or higher or the American Diabetes Association paper screener of 5 or higher
  • Must have a Hemoglobin A1C of 5.7 to 6.4% or clinically diagnosed with gestational diabetes mellitus during a previous pregnancy
  • If taking a plasma glucose test, it must be measured 2hrs after a 75-gm glucose load, with a result of 140 to 199 mg/dl OR a fasting glucose score of 100 to 125mg/dl
Class Structure
  • Program is 1 year long
  • Participants meet once a week for 1hr for the first 6 months then monthly for the remaining 6 months
  • Participants have A1C taken at the beginning, midpoint, and end of program
  • Days of the week and times for each class vary and change with each new cohort
