Emory CFAR Members Awarded NIH-funded Martin Delaney Collaboratories for HIV Cure

Congrats to the ERASE AIDS Program team at Emory who recently submitted FOUR successful applications for the NIH-funded UM1 program, the Martin Delaney Collaboratories (MDC) for HIV Cure Research the flagship NIH program to support research aimed at eradicating HIV/AIDS. This achievement is remarkable, placing Emory CFAR Members in leadership roles of 40% of the MDCs funded this year. Read more.

ERASE AIDS Director, Guido Silvestri (Director, CFAR Virology Core) joins Deanna Kulpa (Associate Director, CFAR Virology Core) and Mirko Paiardini (Co-Director, CFAR Next Generations Therapeutics Scientific Working Group) to co-lead the only Emory-based MDC, the Enterprise for Research and Advocacy to Stop and Eradicate HIV (ERASE HIV). Through ERASE HIV, they will characterize the key immune system functions that control persistent HIV infection and design innovative, immune-based therapies to eliminate or control the virus in the absence of antiretroviral therapy. ERASE HIV is bolstered by a robust community-academic partnership with our colleagues at SisterLove, Inc the first women's HIV and reproductive justice organizations in the U.S. Southeast. Click here to learn more about ERASE HIV, and follow along with @EraseHIV on Twitter.

Silvestri also co-leads the UNC-Chapel Hill-based Collaboratory of AIDS Researchers for Eradication (CARE) one of the two original MDC programs, working to better understand persistent HIV infection and discover novel approaches to disrupt HIV latency, clear the HIV reservoir, and control viral rebound.

Emory CFAR Co-Director, Ann Chahroudi will co-lead the new Pediatric Adolescent Virus Elimination (PAVE) Collaboratory, based at Johns Hopkins University. PAVE is the first MDC to focus specifically on HIV cure research in infants and children. PAVE will work with pediatric nonhuman primate models to study the safety and effectiveness of novel treatments, as well as develop tools and techniques for pediatric populations. Click here to learn more about PAVE, and follow along with @PAVE_MDC on Twitter.

Rafick Pierre Sékaly (Associate Director, CFAR Systems Immunology Core) will co-lead the new Sanford Burnham Prebys-based Reversing Immune Dysfunction (RID) for HIV-1 Eradication. The RID-HIV Collaboratory aims to understand the molecular and cellular basis for the loss of immune stability and function in people living with HIV and to create immune-based treatments, enhance viral reactivation and elimination strategies, and evaluate treatment effectiveness in nonhuman primate models.

AIDSVu and HepVu are now accepting applications for the 2021-2022 Vu Fellowship for researchers in viral hepatitis and HIV spaces. Each fellow will be awarded a $10,000 personal stipend (awarded to the individual) to conduct a research project related to HIV, Hepatitis C, or both, using data on AIDSVu and/or HepVu, along with other data sources.

Priority will be given to research proposals that address health disparities and/or relevant intersections such as syndemics, the opioid epidemic, social determinants of health, STIs, etc. Fellows’ research will be featured on the Vu platforms and used to further illustrate the impact of HIV and/or viral hepatitis in the U.S.

Applications are due September 30, 2021. Click here for details.

Apply for the 4th Annual Planning for Success Grant Writing Fellowship

The Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) at Emory University is now accepting applications for the 4th Annual Planning for Success (PfS) NIH R-level Grant Writing Fellowship program. This nine-month fellowship will be held online and is open to faculty who are from Emory University, HBCUs in the Southeast, and any school associated with an NIH-funded CFAR. PfS sessions are designed to help investigators write and successfully compete for an HIV-related NIH R-level grant (e.g. R01) in clinical, social/behavioral, virological, and/or immunological research.

More information about the 2022 PfS Fellowship, its schedule, and a link to the application form can be found in THIS FLYER. Please note that the application deadline for this opportunity is October 18, 2021

If you have questions about PfS, contact Galina Terbova (galina.terbova@emory.edu).

Emory CFAR Member Accolades

Rasheeta Chandler (@techsexed) recently was awarded new NIH funding to continue her efforts to promote HIV prevention and sexual/reproductive health among Black women in the South. Rasheeta and her team will refine and test in-the-kNOW (Novel approaches to Optimizing Women's Health), an evidence-based and theory-driven mobile app specifically designed for PrEP-eligible Black women. This R34 builds on a proposal that was developed for the CFAR Planning for Success Fellowship (info above). Learn more: R34MH128048
Jessica Wells (@JessicawellsPhD) received her first R01, Implementing an Evidence-based, Multilevel Intervention to Promote HPV Vaccination among HIV+ Adults! This new award will expand Jessica's existing research to increase awareness among people living with HIV (PLWH) and their providers of the importance of HPV vaccination as a key preventative heath care measure, aiming to ultimately alleviate the disproportionate impact of cancer among PLWH.
