Street Law is an intellectually rich experience that combines legal theory and practice, and embraces Georgia State University College of Law’s values of cultural competence, social justice, educating future leaders, and preparing citizens for lifelong learning. The broad course goal for the law students is to develop tangible legal professional skills through educating the community about the law. For the community member, Street Law is a course in practical and fundamental law. Throughout the course, students will examine the role of law, justice, power, and equality in shaping our democracy for the purpose of enhancing civic skills and civic engagement.

Each semester, a community partner will be arranged to allow law students to teach a course for youth in juvenile detention centers, high school students in the Atlanta Public School system, or adult learners in correctional facilities. Law students will work in groups/pairs and spend class sessions discussing issues related to pedagogy and substantive law in preparation for team-teaching their class the following week. Community sessions will consist of 60-90 minutes of interactive learning. Law students will keep a journal on their teaching from week to week as a means of recordkeeping and to foster the self-reflection necessary to improve their teaching skills.
