Robert Kennedy visits with Black Community

About This Item

KRON News footage from May 10th 1967 featuring a visit by US Senators Robert Kennedy, George Murphy and Joseph S. Clark to San Francisco's Western Addition neighborhood. Also includes an interview with Hunters Point housing project resident Mrs David Commer (holding her son Charles Eugene) and views of a public hearing on the living conditions in San Francisco's predominantly black neighborhoods at the Bayview Community Center, featuring testimony by Mrs Osceola Washington and Mayor John Shelley. Note that future Mayor of San Francisco Willie Brown can be seen in Kennedy's entourage. Thanks to historical researcher and consultant Paul Lee for positively identifying Mrs David Commer and her son Charles Eugene and also for confirming Kennedy is seen on-camera in the Western Addition (he also visited the Hunters Point neighborhood that day). Note that KPIX-TV cameras were there on the same day and their footage can also be viewed in DIVA.
