Art, the Barrio and Chicana/o Activism Online
In this dynamic lecture, Dr. Álvaro Huerta will focus on the barrio and Chicana/o activism through the use of fine art, murals and photography. This includes highlighting the brilliant art of acclaimed painter Salomón Huerta (his sibling) to humanize los de abajo / those on the bottom against racist narratives, practices and policies towards brown people.
Álvaro Huerta, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in Urban & Regional Planning and Ethnic & Women’s Studies at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. He’s the award-winning author of the book: Defending Latina/o Immigrant Communities: The Xenophobic Era of Trump and Beyond. Born in the U.S., he experienced abject poverty and violence while growing up in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, and the Ramona Gardens public housing project (Big Hazard projects) in East Los Angeles, Alta California. The recipient of a Ford Foundation Fellowship, he holds a Ph.D. (City and Regional Planning) from UC Berkeley, along with an M.A. (Urban Planning) and a B.A. (History) from UCLA.
