NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy

    NIH Policy Review

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has issued a new policy on data management and sharing for data generated from NIH-funded or -conducted research that will go into effect on Jan. 25, 2023. Chief among the new requirements is for researchers to develop and submit a data management and sharing plan as part of the grant application process.

To learn more about the policy, visit the NIH’s scientific data sharing hub, which contains all information pertaining to this and other relevant agency policies and resources. A helpful starting point for institutions and investigators is the NIH’s Learning page — particularly the two-webinar series on policy implementation.

Report: Institutional Strategies for the NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy: Infrastructure, Policies, and Services

As academic institutions prepare to meet a greater demand among researchers on their campuses given the upcoming NIH policy, sharing existing tactics and expected strategic opportunities is critical to meeting this demand.

The Association of Academic Health Science Libraries (AAHSL), the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), and the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) conducted a research project to identify and lift up existing or proposed innovations in infrastructure, policies, and services for other institutions to reuse, build upon, or otherwise leverage to meet this upcoming NIH policy.
