Join Charleston Moves for a police-escorted bicycle ride over the Wappoo Cut Bridge and along key corridors and intersections we are advocating to upgrade. The route for the ride includes streets with forthcoming bike/ped improvements, including James Island's Maybank Highway, Folly Road, Camp Road, Riverland Drive and Woodland Shores Road. This is a unique opportunity to comfortably enjoy beautiful handlebar views of the Wappoo Creek between James Island and West Ashley, while supporting our work to advance a safe, equitable crossing and critical connections.

Please check in at the Charleston Moves table — behind Maybank Public House — no later than 10:30 am. The ride will begin promptly at 11 am. We kindly request that you fill out our waiver in advance; it is required to participate.

Following the ride, folks are encouraged to stop by Maybank Public House’s outdoor beer garden. Brunch will be available for purchase, and Charleston Moves will offer opportunities for the public to take action in support of multi-modal access over the Wappoo Cut. This engagement, alongside stakeholder support, will bolster steps forward to develop a conceptual plan for the crossing.

Whether you want to participate in the ride or stop by afterwards, the community’s participation helps demonstrate critical mass, showing our local leaders and decision-makers that this safety project needs to be prioritized. Come out to join neighbors and friends in taking a stand for an equitable Wappoo Cut crossing, one that is safe and accessible for all!

IMPORTANT DETAILS TO NOTE IN ADVANCE OF THE RIDE:

  1. Check in at the Charleston Moves table — behind Maybank Public House — no later than 10:30 am. The ride will begin promptly at 11 am. Please RSVP in advance.
  2. Parking is available behind Charleston Flower Market in the Terrace Plaza. If possible, you are encouraged to walk, ride your bike, bus or carpool to the event.
  3. The ride is 7.5 miles long and will take about an hour to complete. The City of Charleston Police Department will provide an escort, but please be aware the ride will be on the road with traffic. A support vehicle will be in present in case of mechanical issues.
  4. As a safety precaution, children 12 and under may not participate on the ride on individual bikes. Small children or babies must be attached to an adult’s bike, rather than riding separately. Companion animals are not permitted on the ride.
  5. This event will adhere to local ordinances and CDC guidance related to COVID-19 to ensure participant safety. You are asked to bring a face mask to protect yourself and others, particularly while engaging with Charleston Moves’ volunteers at the check-in table.

The Wappoo Cut Bridge is located along Folly Road between West Ashley and James Island. While it has sidewalks leading to it, and a maintenance path across, the space is too narrow and close to fast-moving vehicles. This is a key corridor that links destinations with existing infrastructure and pending projects, including: the West Ashley Greenway, Maryville Bikeway, new Ashley River Bicycle & Pedestrian Bridge, McLeod Plantation, Rethink Folly Road improvements, Maybank Highway complete streets work, James Island County Park, and more. Despite progress and opportunities on both sides, this bridge remains a barrier. Through 2021, we will be working on a technical assistance grant application to determine the best way to tackle this, while building up stakeholder support and community storytelling.
