The Future is Now
Western Washington University’s (WWU) new 5,000 m2 Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Building is a breakthrough facility – it will be the first higher education STEM building to be tracking Zero Energy and Zero Carbon certification through the International Living Future Institute (ILFI) in the US. By utilizing a mass timber/CLT structure and designing to “smart building” standards identified by ILFI, the facility advances WWU’s vision to become the state’s first carbon-net-neutral university campus.
Regenerating the Site
The site is being transformed from a parking lot into an environmentally friendly building surrounded by a native and climate-adaptive plant palette. The direct connection to Sehome Hill Arboretum provides a unique opportunity to create a habitat bridge for bearer, pollinator, and forager species from the arboretum to the campus.
STEM for Everyone
WWU's STEM enrollment growth, combined with Washington’s goals to expand opportunities in science, technology and engineering education, created a need for this facility. The project brings together the newly formed electrical engineering department and the computer science department into one space, creating multi-disciplinary learning environments and collaboration, teaming, and office spaces.
