About

About us

Blue Bikes is an affordable bikeshare program uniquely designed for New Orleans. The Blue Bikes fleet is comprised of hundreds of pedal-assist e-bikes that make the most out of your movements, allowing you to roll with confidence on a bicycle built for you.

Bringing bikeshare to New Orleans expands transportation options for our residents and visitors at a low cost. Building quality public transit is essential to building a city for the ages.

Sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana, Blue Bikes is a partnership between the City of New Orleans and Drop.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana

Blue Bikes directly aligns with the mission of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana to improve the health and lives of Louisianians, and it is a long-term investment in the health and wellness of New Orleanians.

This program encourages healthy lifestyles and gives more people access to exercise in a way that is environmentally friendly. It also gives residents of food desert areas a new way to get to farmers markets or full-service grocery stores, so they can buy fresh produce and other healthy options. Together, these factors over time can lower the total cost of care and benefit the community.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana is proud to be the title sponsor of Blue Bikes of Louisiana.

Blue Krewe

Blue Krewe is a local community-based nonprofit that operates and manages Blue Bikes. Our team is dedicated to offering the Greater New Orleans region an equitable bikeshare program that is an affordable, fun, and convenient transportation option for all. Here at Blue Krewe, we believe that expanding access to Blue Bikes will benefit the entire region by catalyzing economic growth, improving community health, and increasing the use of existing transit infrastructure.

Blue Krewe was founded in 2020 Blue Krewe and received critical start-up funding and fiscal sponsorship from the Greater New Orleans Foundation. Blue Krewe's partners include BikeEasy, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana, and the City of New Orleans.

Park Respectfully

Please be respectful when you lock up your Blue Bike. Do not block sidewalks or lock to historic buildings, balcony posts, or fences.

Explore all of New Orleans

As long as you bring the bike back into the system to lock up there is no additional charge. Out of system fee (locking up your bike outside the system): $25.

Park Outside a Hub

Want to park closer to your destination? For a $2 convenience charge, Blue Bikes can be locked at any public rack or other appropriate bike parking space within our service area. Make sure to always lock the bikes to a fixed structure and end your ride in the app.

Pay as you go

Your payment method will be charged automatically based on your usage. Payments are non-refundable once you ride.

Safety

Follow the rules

Yield to pedestrians. Stop at all red lights and stop signs. Ride in the direction of traffic. Use the grip bell to signal your presence. Do not wear more than one earphone while riding. Obey traffic laws at all times.

Plan a sensible route

Plan your route before you ride to follow the safest route to your destination. You can use our app to find your way to a bike you’ve reserved or to a hub when you want to end your ride.

Do a pre-ride check

Adjust the seat height; try the grip bell; and if you’re riding at night, check that the front and rear lights are illuminated.

Be predictable

Make it easy for the traffic around you. Don’t make unexpected turns that put yourself and others in danger. Ride at a steady pace so other vehicles can anticipate your movement.

Wear a helmet

Whenever you ride, wear a helmet. Always buckle the strap. Replace your helmet after any crash and whenever you see signs of damage.

Tips for turns

Use hand signals to let drivers and other cyclists know your intention to turn or to stop. Don’t turn or change lanes without knowing the position of the cars and bikes around you.

Frequently asked questions

General

  • What if I have questions or issues?

You may contact us via support@bluebikesnola.com.

  • What is a service area?

A service area is the blue-bordered zone on the Blue Bikes Nola App where you can ride and park a vehicle. Parking vehicles outside this area can subject you to a fine.

  • Are Blue Bikes available in my neighborhood?

With community support, our goal is to serve as many New Orleanians as possible! To see our current service area, visit our system area map.

  • Do I have to wear a helmet?

Blue Bikes strongly recommends that riders wear a helmet.

Starting/Ending a Trip

  • How do I find a bike?

Bikes can be located using the Blue Bikes app available for iPhone and Android.

  • How do I check out a bike?

Download the Blue Bikes Nola app. Set up a payment method. To unlock a Blue Bike, scan the QR code that is located on the handlebars or on the lock.
From the main map screen, tap the Scan button at the bottom of the screen, and scan the QR code to start riding. If the bike's lock does not unlock, contact support at support@bluebikesnola.com or by tapping the “?” icon at the bottom right of the app to submit your issue by app form.

  • How do I find the QR code?

The QR code can be found on the e-bike in two places: in a small rectangular area between the handlebars, and on the lock over the rear wheel.

  • How do I lock the bike?

Every bike has a cable lock that wraps around a fixed object and wheel lock that closes through the rear wheel. Wrap the cable lock around a bike rack or street sign pole. Insert the circular end of the cable into the wheel lock. Manually press the orange button on the bottom left corner of the wheel lock and push until securely locked. Use the Blue Bikes Nola app to end your trip by submitting a photo of your locked bike. Be sure your photo clearly shows the cable secured to bike parking!

  • What if I can't take a photo to end my trip?

If you're not able to take a picture of your bike, don't panic! Just make sure it's locked safely in a hub or at a rack. You can then shoot us a message through the Blue Bikes app by tapping the “?” icon at the bottom right corner.

  • What do I do if the trip is still running on the app?

Safely lock and secure your bike at a hub. You can then contact Blue Bikes support at support@bluebikesnola.com or by tapping the “?” icon at the bottom right of the app to submit your issue by app form. Our team will get back to you as soon as possible to help successfully end your trip.

  • Where can I park?

Feel free to securely park your bike and end your trip at any Blue Bikes hub that is highlighted on the service area map in the Blue Bikes Nola app. Additionally, our team recognizes that each rider has different needs. As such, we offer a $2 Out-of-Hub Convenience Charge that provides greater accessibility by allowing riders who are on-the-go to be able to secure their Blue Bike to any publicly accessible bike rack or to sign posts within the service area that is not a designated Blue Bikes hub.

  • Can I place my Blue Bikes ride on hold while on a trip?

Yes! You can use the Hold function to lock your bike for short errands while on a trip. While your bike is on Hold, no one else will be able to rent it. Because no other user can access the bike while it is on hold, you will be charged for the time you have a bike on Hold.

  • Can I ride outside of the service area?

Yes! You can ride the bike outside of the service area. However, if you end your trip outside of the service area, you will be charged a $25.00 Out-of-Service area Fee. If you are outside of the service area and want to stop to eat or grab a bottle of water, you can put the bike on hold and lock it temporarily (you will still be charged for the time the bike is on hold). You can then unlock and continue riding.

  • What are Blue Bikes Hubs?

Blue Bikes hubs are officially designated parking areas that are highlighted on the service area map in the Blue Bikes Nola app. You can securely lock your vehicle and end your trip at any Blue Bikes hub. Additionally, you are more likely to find a vehicle at a Blue Bikes hub.

Yes! The Blue Bikes for All program is a $4 per month reduced fare monthly membership for New Orleans residents who use Louisiana Purchase (S/NAP) or Medicaid.

  • What is the hold amount for checking out a bike?

For credit and debit cards, the hold amount for bike rental is $10. For prepaid credit cards, the hold amount is $30.

  • When is the “hold” release on my credit card?

  • Why is my card getting declined when I start a trip?

Credit or debit cards will be charged an authorized hold of $10.00 when you start a trip, while the hold amount for prepaid cards is $30. If you are unable to start a trip and your card is declined, please check the available balance on your card. This hold will be released at the end of your trip but may take a couple of days to reflect on your credit or debit statement.

  • Membership benefits

Riders can take an unlimited number of trips per day for the membership period as long as the total ride time is within 60 minutes. Charges of $0.15/minute apply when a rider exceeds 60 minutes of total daily ride time. The given minutes will reset at midnight every day.

About e-bikes

  • What are pedal-assist e-bikes?

Pedal-assist e-bikes ride just like any other bicycle. You get on and you pedal! The difference is that when you pedal, there is a small electric motor that adds an assist to each pedal stroke. This makes it possible to ride an e-bike to work without getting sweaty in the summer and allows riders to go further than they might otherwise ride -- providing access to more employment opportunities, more grocery stores, more restaurants, and more friends!

  • How does the motor work?

The motor turns on automatically when you start pedaling. The motor stops running when you stop pedaling. The e-bikes stop providing power assist at approximately 16 mph.

  • How do I turn off an e-bike?

The e-bike doesn't need to be turned off. You just need to lock the e-bike to a rack and take a photo to end the trip.

  • Are these the same bikes we had before?

No. The previous bikes were removed from the city by the previous out-of-state operator. This is a 100% new fleet of state-of-the-art pedal-assist e-bikes managed by Blue Krewe, a local, community based non-profit!

  • What do I do if my Blue Bike breaks?

Lock your Blue Bike at the nearest hub and email support@bluebikesnola.com to let us know.

Bike Saints Program

  • What is the Bike Saints Program?

The Bike Saints Program is an initiative to maintain high quality public spaces and provide a way for locals to directly support the creation of a top-notch bikeshare system here in New Orleans. Blue Bikes membership holders have the opportunity to earn a free monthly membership by returning Blue Bikes parked Out-of-Hub to designated Blue Bikes hubs.

  • How does the Bike Saints Program work?

A Bike Saint receives one Return-to-Hub Point after they return an Out-of-Hub vehicle to a designated Blue Bikes hub.
By earning 20 Return-to-Hub Points in a calendar month, a Bike Saint qualifies for a free monthly membership that is redeemable for the subsequent month. Bike Saints who earn 20 Return-to-Hub Points in a calendar month will be emailed a unique promo code to redeem their free monthly membership.

  • Do I need to sign up to become a Bike Saint?

You don't need to sign up to become a Bike Saint! Anyone with a monthly membership is eligible. Once you have earned 10 Return-to-Hub Points you automatically become a Bike Saint! After that, you will receive a special automated email after each trip ends so you can track your progress while you help your community.

  • Do Return-to-Hub Points roll over from month to month?

Return-to-Hub Points do not roll over and reset to zero on the first day of each month. There is no limit on the amount of Return-to-Hub Points that a Bike Saint can earn. However, a Bike Saint will only be able to earn one free monthly membership per month.
