Amazon RDS for Oracle and Amazon RDS for SQL Server now support R5b instance types in additional AWS Regions

Posted on: Dec 4, 2020

On December 1, we announced support for Amazon EC2 R5b instance types in the US East (Ohio), Europe (Frankfurt) and Asia Pacific (Singapore) Regions. Starting today, we’re happy to announce you can now launch Amazon EC2 R5b instance types using Amazon RDS for Oracle and Amazon RDS for SQL Server in additional AWS Regions:

North America

  • US East (Northern Virginia), US West (Oregon)

Asia Pacific

  • Asia Pacific (Tokyo)

Powered by the AWS Nitro System, Amazon EC2 R5b instance types are available in 8 sizes with up to 96 vCPUs and 768 gigabytes of memory. R5b instance types are ideally suited for relational database workloads, delivering up to 60 gigabytes per second of EBS-optimized bandwidth and between 64,000 (SQL Server) and 256,000 (Oracle) IOPS, an increase of up to 3X over R5 instance types."

The increase in EBS-optimized performance enables large databases to migrate to Amazon RDS. In addition, existing Amazon RDS customers can migrate their DB Instances to smaller-sized R5b instances and still meet their workload IOPS requirements, saving on compute and licensing costs.

Amazon RDS makes it easy to set up, operate, and scale Oracle and SQL Server database deployments in the cloud. To get started, please visit the Amazon RDS User Guide. For pricing and complete regional availability, please refer to the Amazon RDS pricing page.
