I have not been here for a few years although I think about this place all the time when I am in the mood for authentic street tacos.
I went for lunch and saw that the place had not changed. Nor had the food. The restaurant remains modest, but it is clean. I had the 3 taco plate again with chicken, brisket, and ground beef. You get sides of beans and rice. Everything was very tasty, actually, everything was delicious. The tacos are street size but pack a ton of flavor. The homemade salsas are excellent.
Prices are very reasonable. My 3 taco plate was only $10.99. Service was good as my lunch was served quickly.
This place is a winner and one that I will return again soon.Helpful 3Thanks 1Love this 2Oh no 0Sep 28, 2018Previous reviewOutstanding tacos! There simply are no words to describe how tasty these tacos are.
I got the tres taco platter with ground beef, chicken, and brisket. Each had a unique flavor and each was excellent. I was literally moaning in delight after each bite.
Borracha beans were spot on, very good. Rice was good. Loved the chips and salsa (roasted tomato), which had just the right amount of heat. Excellent.
Prices are very reasonable--I have posted the menu as of 9/2018. The owner is friendly and helpful. The restaurant and tables are clean.
Can't wait to return, my mouth is watering already. A true hidden gem. - Dec 8, 2023
Tranky's Tacos is by far THE BEST tacos in the DFW, and it's not even close!! I've tried over 20+ tacos places and have been generally disappointed by the lack of flavor and gentrification of the cuisine in this area. Guys, gals, and non-binary pals, buckle your seat belts because eating tacos at Tranky's is GUARANTEED to rock your world!
The place is a family-run business, and the daughter was able to walk us through the menu and the cooking process. They braise their meats for hours, and everything is cooked fresh. I got an assortment of tacos (barbacoa, fajita de res, carnitas, and al pastor), and they all did not disappoint. I will say that the braised meats were by far OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD and are must-tries when you come. They were so juicy and packed with flavor. The corn tortillas were handmade and had amazing structural integrity despite the juiciness of the meat (the worst is when the corn tortillas are old and break while you eat them). My favorite personally was the carnitas!
The price is on the higher side (~$2.75 per taco), but these tacos were worth every single penny. I live 30+ minutes away from this place, but you best believe I'll be at this establishment weekly.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - JD M.Richardson, TX45528717Oct 27, 2023
Tacos are good, but the outer tortilla had become stiff, chewy. I don't like the "Mexican rice". I rarely see rice like this- seems ground up and clumpy. Not much flavor. My guess is if it's the kind you grew up eating you will love it. I had the bean soup instead of refried beans. It had cut up hot dogs in it. Like the rice, if you grew up eating that style you will likely love it. I'm not a fan.
There were two hot sauces available- red and green. Green was on the mild side and the red warmer.
As for service, it's 5 stars all the way. Very nice staff, helpful.
Ambiance is typical of a taqueria in a strip center in an industrial area- plain, all business. The table could have been cleaned better.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Aug 16, 2023
Just NOOOOO!
The fish tacos had a musty stale taste! Called my order in, came to pick up and they we're still making them. Perfect, hot food. WRONG! It wasn't even luke warm!!! Huh?? Ordered a side of chips and queso, EVEN THE QUESO wasn't any sort of hot.
That's CRAZY!
Just a hard PALE NO!
Queso was good tho just cold and SMALL AS CRAP not worth 5 bucks AT ALL. Soooo odd.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Stephen R.Garland, TX086Apr 6, 2024
Another sketchy review, this time for Tranki's tacos in Garland. Tucked away in a nondescript strip mall, this joint is as busy as the road it is located on, and that's a good thing. Despite the lunch crush, the staff is friendly and attentive. The food is definitely worth the short wait and the portions are very generous. I opted for the street taco plate, with Carnitas, chicken and El Pastor. It also came with Borracho beans and Mexican rice. All were equally delicious. There is some seating inside as well as outside on the front deck. Highly recommended - 5 stars for the food!

Went back today so I could check to see if my first time impression was a fluke, and I'm pleased to say no, it wasn't. This is a small mom & pop with some outdoor seating. Now for the food - The tacos are sooo good! I got the platter today just before they closed, I got the steak tacos and received customer service with a smile. Last time, I got one of each, and they were all good, all perfectly seasoned. The taco salad had so much in it, the only thing was the shell was not crunchy enough. The accompanying beans were to die for and I don't usually get beans but i ate them all. The chef came out to say Hello. The place was busy during lunch but with quick service. There was enough parking spaces. This is my new go-to for tacos.

I was greeted immediately (by the chef) when I entered. I was given a sample of the agua frescas as I was unsure which one I wanted. The prices were appropriate and the portion sizes were quite nice for the prices.
The taco salad was quite sumptuous and the chicken tacos were served with cilantro, onions, and lime. The sauce went quite well with the taco, and had the right amount of kick. The Agua de Jamaica was a nice surprise. It wasn't abundantly sweet and was a good price for the size. I definitely recommend this place, and I will go again if I'm in this area.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jul 9, 2023
O-M-G! These tacos are so damn good!! Well everything I ate was so damn good! I can confidently say this was the best Mexican food I've ever eaten. I'm not a huge Mexican food fan because I always feel disappointed by it so I didn't expect anything great. Boy was I wrong! We started with the chips and guacamole. The chips were perfectly toasted and perfectly salted. Not oily and too burnt like some chips I've had. And that guacamole was so bright and fresh. Both my husband and I looked at the menu after we ate the guacamole and regretted not getting the tres dips platter. I also ordered the Tres Street Tacos Platter. I choose two pollo tacos and one barbacoa taco. Those tacos were so perfectly seasoned and all the accoutrements on the tacos come together so perfectly with the seasoned meat. It's like a bite of heaven. The Borrocho Beans...yum!! The beans are soft and the abundance of flavor in the sauce/broth is so good I could have drank it up. The rice and sautéed onions on the side are a nice addition and I enjoyed it everything all together. You know the saying, "Tastes so good, makes you wanna slap your mama?" This is the food that gives you that feeling. I would seriously eat here every day if I didn't live across the country. I did contemplate ordering tacos and flying them home with me. And the staff are all so nice, patient and helpful with answering questions about the menu. This place so a true gem! 10/10!
