Q:
How long to the tamales keep when frozen? Is that just for best taste or do they genuinely go bad?
A:
Tommy Tamale sells frozen tamales vacusealed. They can tell you how long they last in the freezer. Obviously fresh tamales taken home and frozen in a zip lock bag won't last as long as vac packed… more

Do they make their tamales there, or do they buy them premade?

I personally can't eat grains of any kind but my large Hispanic family loves it when we bring Tommy's tamales to all the family gatherings. Of course we pick up extra to put in the fridge. For my family at home as well. My. Daughter loved the brisket tamales and hopes they come back soon. My in laws love the dessert tacos.
We are thinking about getting tamales for our favorite teachers this year to thank them for a great first yr in Cross Timbers Middle School.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Lucas B.Grapevine, TX01Mar 1, 2024

My wife, my daughter, and myself walked into an empty restaurant. I thought to myself 'this does not bode well'. We were directed to a counter to place our order and we ordered the Tamale Pie with mild pork, the Tommy Bowl with habanero pork and a Chicken Quesadillas. We also got chips with salsa and queso on the side.
I have rarely seen my wife react to food in a dramatic way, but after one bite of the Tamale Pie, her eyes got wide, she leaned back in her chair and both arms were raised like Tommy himself had scored a touchdown and she was the ref.
Speaking of Tommy, he came out and personally greeted us, which was really nice, he seems like a great guy.
The quesadilla and Tommy Bowl were both amazing, and frankly my daughter and I couldn't finish because we just got so full. The queso was some of the best I've ever tased as well. I don't have a great point of reference for this, as I've only had Queso from Chipotle, but Tommy's Queso was hands down significantly superior.
They also have a little market with salsa and hot sauces for sale.
HIGHLY recommend!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Apr 5, 2024
This place is slaying in the reviews, and I see no reason to dissent. The core of what they do is great in so many ways: tamales are pure Americana, a cuisine that goes back for thousands of years in the region. They are well suited to the modern world, and people with special dietary needs will find vegan tamales and no gluten. And it's fast, convenient food; mine were heated up in minutes.
Ordering a platter with four tamales, I got two of the vegan ones with black beans and two bean and cheese. I could hardly tell the difference between the two, but they were certainly delicious, especially with salsa. More beans and rice on the side made for a filling meal, and at around $10, it's as good of a deal as you're likely to get.
The one caveat is that they are not open particularly late, and from what I heard, online ordering closes an hour before close of business. So plan ahead, and head on over.Helpful 2Thanks 1Love this 3Oh no 0 - Wendy C.Centennial, CO0236Mar 27, 2024
The Tommy Bowl was OUTSTANDING. There were generous helpings and all flavors blended beautifully. Even the black beans and rice had the perfect texture and flavor. I was originally skeptical of all the five star reviews, but this restaurant has definitely earned them!
I am only in the Dallas area for a few days, and I plan to come back a few times. I just can't get tamales like this anywhere else.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mar 1, 2024
The Tommy Tamale Market & Cafe is quietly placed on the corner of a strip center. There's was ample parking available when we stopped in for lunch so we were able to easily find a good spot. The restaurant was quiet but if it had been busy, I imagine it could get loud in the space.
The food was good and I loved that they served them in resealable bowls. Don't expect a vast menu; they are concise and to the point...after all it's called Tommy TAMALE. We tried the Tommy Bowl with black bean tamale and a Tamale Pie with spicy chicken (possibly pork). We both had leftovers so we combined them together to make a bowl to take home. I'm happy to report, the leftovers reheated well.
Although I'm not planning on taking the extended drive to go back, if I was in the area I would go back for another bowl or two.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jan 31, 2024
We have enjoyed Tommy Tamale many times. The food is delicious. The service is great. The owner has come and visited with us several times when we have visited. He can be seen on a regular basis greeting the patrons as he walks through the restaurant and store with a big smile on his face.
Another thing that we love about Tommy Tamales is that we are able to buy several dozen frozen tamales to eat later at home.
A cool note for the vegans and vegetarians out there...they have amazing tamales, beans, and rice that even the sworn meat eaters will love.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Aug 10, 2023Updated review
Oh yeah! Not only is Tommy the nicest guy you'll ever meet, but he slings sum great grub outta the back.
This was my 3rd "Hole in the Wall" establishment this week. You could say it's barely a hole in the wall. Really not that old but they're geared for take out of their frozen tamales which appear to be at least 50 percent of their business. They have a few tables to dine in on their fabulous tamale creations if you want to. The ac was acting up today and not much cooler than outside so, I opted to take with me.
This visit, I took my time to carefully peruse the menu and get exactly what i wanted. This ended up being a burrito. Specifically, a burrito stuffed with a beef tamale, beans and rice, seasoned beef, cheese, Fritos and then grilled. Wow, what a concoction and delicious. It was so hot I couldnt eat it while driving so took it home. 30 minutes later when I got it in the house it was the perfect temperature. It came with sour cream, pico de gallo, salsa verde, and a hot chipotle sauce. All terrific.
We also got a tamale bowl which is basically a chili pie with a tamale of your choice on top and Fritos on bottom. Again, superb!
If you are anywhere close to Tommys dont miss a chance to stop in. Tell him Guy H sent you.Helpful 57Thanks 11Love this 57Oh no 1Feb 28, 2023Previous reviewOk,wow, what a surprise! I had seen this place reviewed by others so book marked. Picking someone up from the airport nearby and hungry,I opted for Tommy Tamales. I'll admit I saw the 1400+ reviews and five star average so didn't read further.
Here's the scoop:
Limited menu
Order at the counter
Friendly welcome
Good prices
Bowles
Plates
Chicken, beef, pork tamales and variations there of
Plus a few goodies to go like Tamales
This place is great but don't go expecting a sit down restaurant. It's counter service a couple of tables and a lot of to go.
That's what you should do ..

Actually quite impressed with this. It's chili with rice and tamales, but it's super solid and for a very reasonable price. It's quick and the portions are reasonable and packs a bunch of flavor and texture.

A colleague and I were in town for business and our first stop was Tommy's. We were both craving some good tamales and boy, this place did not disappoint.
We were promptly helped and the waiter answered all of our questions. They checked in on us and made sure we were taken care.
We ordered the tamale plate with beef and chicken, and the tamale burrito along with guac & chips. The chips were not doing it for us, thick with little favor. But the tamales and burrito were flavorful, and filling.
We enjoyed a quiet space during the lunch hour, potentially because it was a weekday. But generally speaking this was a great stop for lunch.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0
