What sets us apart?
Become a surgical intensivist in our specialized training program, where you will work alongside experts including L.D. Britt, MD, MPH, considered by the American College of Surgeons to be the founder of the specialty of acute care surgery.
Handle total patient management in a multidisciplinary team environment, manage and interpret data from invasive monitoring devices, promote leadership and administration of critical care services, and perform basic science and clinical research. Our graduates assume leadership roles in surgical critical care and provide optimal patient care in academic tertiary or community environments.
Where you'll train
Sentara Norfolk General Hospital
Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, the primary teaching hospital for EVMS, is home to the area's only Level I trauma center, burn trauma unit and Nightingale Air Ambulance and to the region's premier heart program, ranked among the nation's best by U.S. News and World Report. Trainees work with full-time and community faculty while completing their burn trauma rotations as well as electives, which can include anesthesia, cardiovascular intensive care unit, infectious disease, pulmonary and renal rotations.
Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters
Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters is the only freestanding children's hospital in Virginia. With 206 beds, it is the regional pediatric referral center for coastal Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. The hospital, a pediatric Level I trauma center, is home to the area's largest and most advanced neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, as well as the state's only acute inpatient rehabilitation unit. Our trainees perform their pediatric experience at this hospital.
