EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
As a result of the district’s commitment on student-focused learning, Alpharetta High School has proposed the addition of two semester-long elective courses in Social Studies: Introduction to African-American/Black Studies and Introduction to U.S Women’s Studies, for the Board’s consideration.
Fulton County Schools has provided a range of Social Studies courses in the past but none as inclusive as the courses released by the Georgia Department of Education in the fall.
Introduction to African-American/Black Studies State Course Number 45.0191
This course explores the culture, history, art, accomplishments, and the march towards societal and political equality as they relate to the lives of African-Americans/Blacks in the United States.
Introduction to U.S. Women’s Studies State Course Number 45.0195
This course will allow students to explore the culture, history, art, accomplishments, and the march towards societal and political equity as they relate to lives of women in the United States.
If approved, a committee of teachers will select a recommended text that will be brought forward for public review and adoption.
These courses were approved by the Georgia Department of Education in August 2020 and are eligible for FTE funding. If approved, all Fulton County high schools will have the option of offering these courses.
