We are Jan & Steve Mathews, blessed to be married and serving the Lord together since 2013. Steve has four adult kids and Jan is a childless stepmom. FamilyLife materials like the Smart Stepfamily curriculum helped us to transform from a stepfamily to a cohesive BLENDED family.  We started leading Smart Stepfamily groups mostly for ourselves shortly after we were married and have been working with stepfamilies ever since. We see marriages saved and lives changed for Christ continually! So often we hear, “I wish there would’ve been something like this for me when we went through this years ago.” 

That has inspired us as we’ve recognized the call from God to step into this ministry. Back in 2018 we asked ourselves: “If not us, then who? And if not now, then when?” After many years of pastoral ministry, the time came to take a step of faith.

After a few years as Affiliates with FamilyLife, we came on staff in October of 2021 so we can turn our full attention to walking alongside stepfamilies. Though all stepfamilies are different, we know now that there are still lots of similarities. 40% of our population is some part of a stepfamily, and remarriages have a much higher divorce rate than first marriages. Our mission is to prevent RE-divorce, and that is happening!
