Emory 60 Plus Network: The Hearing Health Journey

Wednesday, June 15, 2022 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM

Participants of this event will learn proper ways of protecting their hearing, tips on when to see an audiologist and how to interpret their testing, different options for hearing technology highlighting the importance of treating hearing loss early to avoid cognitive decline, and lastly, the latest coping mechanisms for living with that ringing in your ears (tinnitus). The Hearing Health Journey begins with protecting hearing while in loud situations to ensure that hearing sensitivity is preserved; however, despite the most diligent earplug-user, some will experience hearing loss as they age. There are signs in your daily communication that may signal the need to have a visit with an audiologist and learn about your hearing. Should hearing loss be measured, a thorough overview of the audiogram and testing will make you comfortable with interpreting the results from your hearing test. Luckily, there is hearing technology that can make speech easier and clearer to hear. Options for technology will be discussed at length, along with the most updated coping mechanisms and theories surrounding tinnitus, or that sound in your ears that doesn’t have a source (i.e. ringing, hissing, humming, crickets, etc.). Join the event for a thorough journey through hearing health and maintaining communication with your loved ones.
