Legendary handbag brand Kate Spade New York was born in 1993, when Kate Spade, a former accessories editor at Mademoiselle magazine, decided to create her own handbag line. After experimenting with several patterns with the help of a pattern maker, Kate Spade and her husband-to-be Andy Spade officially launched the brand. One of their six initial designs was the Sam bag, a boxy nylon handbag that would become one of its signature products.
Over the years, the handbag empire expanded to clothing and jewelry, followed by bedding and fragrance.
